EN 581-1 Part 1: General Safety Requirements

EN 581-1 Part 1: General Safety Requirements

The European standard “EN 581-1 Outdoor furniture – Seating and tables for camping, home and work use – Part 1: General safety requirements” describes general safety requirements for contracted outdoor seating areas and tables for camping, home and adult use, regardless of materials, design/construction or manufacturing processes. This standard does not apply to seating areas in spectator facilities. Furthermore, it does not include requirements regarding the durability of upholstery materials, wheels, tilting and reclining mechanisms, and seat height adjustment mechanisms. Mechanical safety requirements are covered by the EN 581-2 standard for seating areas and the EN 581-3 standard for tables.

The standard appendices include a schematic presentation of the requirements and conditions relating to cutting and pinch points (Appendix A) and a rationale regarding finger pinching (Appendix B).

For the purposes of this standard, the following terms and definitions apply:

  • Automatic locking mechanism: This refers to a mechanism that engages without user intervention and prevents unwanted movement.
  • Cutting and jamming point: Cutting and jamming points exist when the distance between two accessible parts moving relative to each other during motion can be 7 mm or more, or 18 mm or less at any position.
  • Outdoor furniture for contractual use: This refers to outdoor furniture designed for non-private use in public spaces.
  • Outdoor furniture for home use: This refers to outdoor furniture designed for private use in locations that are not open to the public.
  • Outdoor furniture for camping: This refers to lightweight, foldable or demountable outdoor furniture designed for use in camping and travel.

In general, security requirements are as follows:

  • To prevent physical injury when the product is in its intended position, all edges and corners must be rounded, beveled, or otherwise protected. This applies to:
  • Seating: Any part of the seat, backrest, and armrests, and the underside of the seat, less than 120 mm from any edge, that is easily accessible with a finger.
  • Tables: Tabletops, any part of the surface less than 500 mm from any edge under the table that is easily accessible by a knee or arm, and any part of the underside of the tabletop.
  • All other parts must be free of burrs, sharp edges, and pointed ends.
  • Moving and adjustable parts must be designed to prevent injuries and accidental operation.
  • It should not be possible for any load-bearing part of the furniture to unintentionally loosen.
  • All parts, lubricated to facilitate gliding, should be designed to protect users from oil stains during normal use.

The requirements for pipe components are as follows:

  • Pipe components with a diameter between 7 mm and 12 mm and a depth of 10 mm or more should not have accessible holes at their ends.
  • The bottoms of the pipe feet that come into contact with the ground must be covered or the top must be covered, but holes are permitted as long as they are between 7 and 12 mm in diameter.
  • These requirements are evaluated using test probes.

In today's world, where outdoor living spaces are increasingly valued for relaxation, entertainment, and work, the safety and durability of furniture in these environments cannot be overlooked. This is where EN 581-1 comes in, setting the standard for general safety requirements in outdoor seating and tables. This standard provides manufacturers, designers, and consumers with a framework to minimize the risks associated with daily use.

The EN 581-1 standard applies to a wide range of outdoor furniture for adults, including seating (such as chairs, benches, and sun loungers) and tables, designed for contracted environments such as campsites, home gardens, patios, and hotels or public spaces. It focuses on structural integrity, regardless of the material (wood, metal, plastic, or composite), excluding permanently fixed installations, removable upholstery, and coverings.

This standard assumes users weigh up to 110 kg, a threshold based on the average adult demographic, and does not cover environmental degradation from UV light, extreme temperatures, or humidity (these are subject to separate standards such as ISO 4892 for weather resistance).

The EN 581-1 standard enhances confidence in weather-exposed products by ensuring compliance and helping to prevent accidents such as tipping, pinching, or structural failures. This standard is part of a trio of standards (along with EN 581-2 for seating mechanics and EN 581-3 for tables) that address the multifaceted challenges of outdoor furniture.

Compliance includes visual inspections, manual measurements with test measuring devices, and preload assessments. Unlike the endurance cycles described in the EN 581-2 standard (from 5.000 cycles for domestic use to 20.000 cycles for contract applications), this standard focuses on qualitative safety checks:

  • Probe tests: Standardized instruments simulate human fingers or limbs to identify areas of entrapment.
  • Edge inspection: Calipers verify the radii at the edges.
  • Documentation: Manufacturers must declare conformity with the CE mark in the EU, and this declaration is usually supported by third-party testing from advanced laboratories.

The tests are material-independent and allow for innovation without compromising safety in sustainable options such as recycled plastics.

The EN 581-1 standard plays a significant role in risk mitigation, with data from consumer safety reports showing a decrease in injury claims for compliant products. In commercial settings, it protects businesses from lawsuits by aligning with liability insurance requirements.

In conclusion, the EN 581-1 standard exemplifies how potential hazards can be transformed into reliable comforts. It is an example of excellence for manufacturers and a subtle guarantee of quality for users. Compliance with this standard is not only a legal requirement but also a necessity for safer and more enjoyable spaces.
