A European standard, “EN 50291-1 Gas detectors - Electrical appliances for the detection of carbon monoxide in homes - Part 1: Test methods and performance requirements”, describes the general requirements for the construction, testing and performance of electrically operated carbon monoxide gas detection devices designed for continuous operation in homes.

The purpose of this standard is to detect and repair or replace defective fossil fuel or solid fuel appliances. The function of the standard is not to monitor low carbon dioxide levels for health purposes. The annex to the standard provides recommendations for units indicating carbon dioxide concentrations (Annex F).
The device can be mains or battery operated. Such devices are designed to warn of an acute level of carbon dioxide, enabling the person to react before they are exposed to a significant risk. Additional requirements for devices to be used in recreational vehicles and similar installations are contained in the standard “EN 50291-2 Electrical appliances for the detection of carbon monoxide in domestic installations - Part 2: Electrical appliances for continuous operation in a fixed installation in recreational vehicles and similar installations including recreational boats - Additional test methods and performance requirements”.
This European standard specifies two types of devices:
Both type A and type B devices can be used interconnected.
However, the following devices are outside the scope of this standard:
Unless otherwise stated, the requirements described apply to both type A and type B devices. The device must reliably detect the presence of carbon monoxide in dwellings under the specified application conditions, generate an alarm and, in the case of a type A device, be capable of initiating executive actions when conditions (both in terms of level and duration) exceed preset alarm set points.
Devices incorporating functionality added to the detection of carbon monoxide shall perform in accordance with the requirements of this standard and the requirements of any standards relating to the additional functionality.
The device, electrical installations and components must comply with the requirements of this standard and the performance requirements. The device must be designed for continuous operation.
The device must not be class “60335” as defined in the EN 1-0 standard.
When interchangeable, the sensor must guarantee the same structural characteristics and functions as the sensor before replacing the internal detector without altering the detector's compliance with all the requirements of this standard. This condition is verified using the information and documentation provided by the detector manufacturer.
The device must comply with the requirements of the EN 60335-1 standard listed in the table provided in the standard.
When the sensor is replaceable, mechanical or electrical means must ensure that the sensor can be replaced without error. In the event of incorrect connection of the sensor or its absence being electrically recognized, the detector must automatically signal an error or an alarm. Furthermore, it must be impossible to connect a sensor designed for a certain type of gas to a detector designed for a different type of gas or it must be recognized as an error.
Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services defined in the standard “EN 50291-1 Gas detectors - Electrical devices for the detection of carbon monoxide in homes - Part 1: Test methods and performance requirements” with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
