A European standard, “EN 50055 Electrical apparatus for the detection and measurement of combustible gases - Performance requirements for Group I apparatus indicating up to 5% (v/v) methane in air”, specifies the performance requirements for portable, transportable and fixed apparatus for the detection and measurement of methane concentrations in mine air (as defined in the standard “EN 50054 Electrical apparatus for the detection and measurement of combustible gases - General requirements and test methods”). Group I instruments indicating up to 100% (v/v) methane are only suitable for use with the specific gases for which they have been calibrated.

The device or parts thereof are intended for use in mines sensitive to firedamp and must meet the general requirements and test methods specified in EN 50054. This European standard is limited to devices designed for the detection and measurement of methane volume fractions in air between 0 percent (v/v) and 5 percent (v/v), but not exceeding that.
Methane gas is a gas emitted into the air from a variety of anthropogenic (human-caused) and natural sources. Anthropogenic emission sources include landfills, oil and natural gas systems, agricultural activities, coal mining, stationary and mobile combustion, wastewater treatment, and certain industrial processes.
Methane is a hydrocarbon that is the primary component of natural gas. Methane is also a greenhouse gas, so its presence in the atmosphere affects the Earth's temperature and climate system. Methane is the second most abundant anthropogenic greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide, accounting for about 16 percent of global emissions. Methane is 28 times more effective at trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. Over the past two centuries, methane concentrations in the atmosphere have more than doubled, largely due to human activities. Because methane is both a potent greenhouse gas and short-lived compared to carbon dioxide, achieving significant reductions would have a rapid and significant impact on atmospheric warming potential.
A methane leak can have significant environmental impacts, so it’s important to be able to detect and monitor it. There are a few different ways to detect methane leaks. One common method is to use a device that can detect methane in the air. These devices are often used along pipelines to detect leaks. Another way to detect methane leaks is with infrared cameras. These cameras detect the heat of the methane, allowing you to see where the leak might be. Once a methane leak is detected, it’s important to monitor the leak to see how much methane is being released into the atmosphere. This can be done with sensors that measure the concentration of methane in the air.
Among the numerous testing, measuring, analyzing and evaluating studies it has carried out for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services defined in the standard “EN 50055 Electrical devices for the detection and measurement of combustible gases - Performance requirements for Group I devices indicating the presence of methane in air up to 5% (v/v)” with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
