EN IEC 60335-2-75 Household and Similar Electrical Appliances - Safety - Part 2-75: Particular Requirements for Commercial Dispensers and Vending Machines

EN IEC 60335-2-75 Household and Similar Electrical Appliances - Safety - Part 2-75: Particular Requirements for Commercial Dispensers and Vending Machines

The standard "EN IEC 60335-2-75 Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-75: Particular requirements for commercial dispensers and vending machines", which is based on a European standard and subsequently published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), specifies the safety requirements for commercial electrical dispensers and vending machines used for the preparation or delivery of food, beverages and consumer products. The nominal voltage of such appliances is not more than 250 Volts for single-phase appliances and 480 Volts for other appliances.

EN IEC 60335-2-75 Household and Similar Electrical Appliances - Safety - Part 2-75: Particular Requirements for Commercial Dispensers and Vending Machines

Devices covered by this standard include, but are not limited to:

  • Bulk tea or coffee brewing machines
  • Cigarette vending machines
  • Coffee Grinders
  • Commercial liquid heaters
  • Coffee machines with or without integrated coffee grinder
  • Coffee machines with cooling system
  • Hot and cold beverage vending machines
  • Hot water dispensers
  • Ice cream and whipped cream dispensers
  • Ice dispensers
  • Newspaper, audio or video tape or disc vending machines
  • Packaged food and beverage vending machines
  • Refrigerated vending machines

Such appliances may have more than one function. For some functions, other standards may apply, for example, for the cooling function, “IEC 60335-2-24 Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-24: Particular requirements for refrigerating appliances, freezing appliances and ice machines” or for heating with microwaves, “IEC 60335-2-25 Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-25: Particular requirements for microwave ovens, including combination microwave ovens”.

The EN IEC 60335-2-75 standard also deals with the hygiene aspects of the devices.

To the extent applicable, this standard deals with common hazards posed by appliances encountered by users and maintainers. However, it does not generally take into account young children playing with the appliance.

The point to note is this:

  • Additional requirements may be required for devices designed for use in vehicles or on ships or aircraft.
  • Many countries specify additional requirements for devices containing pressure vessels.
  • In many countries, additional requirements are specified by national health authorities, national labour protection authorities, national water supply authorities and similar authorities.

However, this standard does not apply to:

  • Devices designed for household use only
  • Devices designed for industrial use only
  • Devices designed for use in locations where special conditions apply, such as the presence of a corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapor or gas)
  • Commercial electric boiling pans (IEC 60335-2-47)
  • Commercial electric bain-marie (IEC 60335-2-50)
  • Amusement machines and personal service machines (IEC 60335-2-82)
  • Devices used solely to dispense money
  • showcases
  • Devices containing electrode type water heaters

For the purposes of this standard, the following definitions apply:

  • Normal operation means that the device operates under the following conditions:
    • The device is operated in standby mode until stable conditions are achieved and then under the most unfavourable distribution procedure. The device is refilled if necessary in accordance with the operating instructions or maintenance instructions and the next operating period is started as soon as possible.
    • Covers and covers of professional type devices and inspected type devices are placed in their intended positions.
    • Coffee machines are operated with their containers filled to their nominal water capacity or connected to the water mains, if available. Coffee machines with a heated surface designed to keep the liquid hot are operated with or without the container, whichever is more inconvenient.
  • A removable part is one that can be removed without the aid of a tool. A part that is removed in accordance with the operating instructions or maintenance instructions is considered a removable part, even if a tool or access key is required for removal. If a part must be removed for assembly purposes, it is not considered removable, even if the instructions state that it should be removed. A part that can be opened is considered a removable part.
  • Thermal cutout refers to a device that limits the temperature of the controlled part by automatically opening the circuit or reducing the current during abnormal operation and is designed so that the setting cannot be changed by the user or maintenance person.
