Elemental Analysis - Lead (Pb)

Lead is an element that has been known and used by humans for centuries. It is a dull, silvery gray metal. It is soft and easily folded into sheet sheets.

Easily processed and resistant to corrosion, lead has been used for pipes, tin and paint since Roman times. In addition, lead has been used in pottery glazes, pesticides, hair dyes, and as an anti-knock additive for gasoline. Lead is known to be harmful to health, especially to children. Therefore, all these uses are now prohibited and replaced by other chemicals are used.

Lead is still widely used in car batteries, pigments, ammunition, cable sheathing, lifting weights, weight belts for diving, lead crystal glass, radiation shielding, and some solders.

Lead is often used to store corrosive liquids. It is also sometimes used in architecture, roofing and stained glass windows.

Lead can accumulate in the body and cause serious health problems. It is toxic, teratogenic (impairs the development of the embryo or fetus) and is carcinogenic.

Lead is obtained mainly from the mineral galena by the roasting process. Today, at least 40 percent of lead is recycled from secondary sources such as scrap batteries and pipes.
