Easily processed and corrosion-resistant, lead has been used since Roman times for pipes, tin, and paint. It has also been used in pottery glazes, insecticides, hair dyes, and as an anti-knock additive in gasoline. Lead is known to be harmful to health, especially children. Therefore, all these uses are now banned and replaced with other chemicals.
Lead is still widely used in car batteries, pigments, ammunition, cable sheathing, lifting weights, weight belts for diving, lead crystal glass, radiation shielding, and some solders.
Lead is often used to store corrosive liquids. It is also sometimes used in architecture, roofing and stained glass windows.
Lead can accumulate in the body and cause serious health problems. It is toxic, teratogenic (impairs the development of the embryo or fetus) and is carcinogenic.
Lead is obtained mainly from the mineral galena by the roasting process. Today, at least 40 percent of lead is recycled from secondary sources such as scrap batteries and pipes.
