Scandium is a silvery-colored metal that darkens in air, burns easily, and reacts with water. Scandium is mainly used in scientific research. However, it has great potential as it has a density almost as low as aluminum and a much higher melting point. Aluminum scandium alloy is used in Russian MIG warplanes, high-end bicycle frames and baseball bats.

Scandium iodide is added to mercury vapor lamps to produce a highly efficient light source that resembles sunlight. These lamps help television cameras reproduce colors well when shooting indoors or at night.

Scandium-46 isotope, which is radioactive, is used as a tracer in oil refining to monitor the movement of various fractions. It is also used in underground pipes to detect leaks.

Scandium has no known biological role. However, it is a suspected carcinogen.

Scandium is widely distributed and is found in very small amounts in more than 800 mineral species.
