The definition of perlite is a type of volcanic glass containing water droplets in the mass formed by the cooling of lava formed in the acid phase of magma and breaking into a structure that can be seen with the eye and microscope. Since some types of perlite are broken into small spheres with a pearly shine, the name perlite is derived from the word "perle" meaning pearl.

In commercial use, perlite is a naturally occurring acidic glass of volcanic origin that expands and becomes porous when heated to a suitable temperature. When perlite is heated between 900-1100 degrees in special forms of certain grain size, it expands its volume approximately 20 times and becomes very light in density, popping like corn.

Porosity is defined as the average ratio of the void volume in perlite particles to the total particle volume. Porosity provides perlite with absorbency and surface cooling properties and is therefore important in application areas where this property is required. In cases where water pollution removal and heat insulation are sought, water absorbency is not desired. The reason for this is that water filling the pores increases thermal conductivity. In this case, the pores are passivated with silicone or a substance and perlite is hydrophobized.

One of the most important benefits of using perlite in houseplant soil is improved drainage. When perlite is mixed with other soil ingredients, it creates small air pockets that help move excess water away from the roots of your plants. Although perlite consumption is mainly in expanded form, sometimes raw perlite is used in casting industries, grinders, decorative rocks and as a source of silica, depending on its physical and chemical properties.

When the chemical structure of perlite is examined, it is seen that it contains 73 percent silicon dioxide, 13 percent aluminum oxide, 4 percent potassium oxide, 4 percent sodium oxide and small amounts of iron (III) oxide, calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, titanium dioxide and 4 percent loss on ignition (LOI).
