Rutherfordium is a non-naturally occurring radioactive metal. Relatively few atoms were obtained. Therefore, this element is used only in scientific research, other than that it has no commercial use.

Rutherfordium is a synthetic, transuranium element. It is produced by bombarding californium-249 atoms with carbon-12 nuclei.

The discovery of the element rutherfordium is somewhat controversial. It was first reported by Russian scientists in 1964. In 1969, US scientists tried to reproduce the results of Russian scientists using different methods. In this study, four rutherfordium isotopes were produced.
