Praseodymium is a soft, silvery-colored metal. Praseodymium is used in various alloys. The high strength alloy formed with magnesium is used in aircraft engines. Mischmetal is an alloy containing about 5 percent praseodymium and is used to make flint for lighters. Praseodymium is also used in alloys for permanent magnets.

Along with other lanthanide elements, praseodymium is used in carbon arc electrodes for studio lighting and projection.

Praseodymium salts are used to color glass, enamels and glazes with an intense and unusually clean yellow. Praseodymium oxide, along with neodymium, is a component of didymium glass. This glass is used in glasses used by welders and glaziers, as it filters yellow light and infrared (heat) radiation.

Praseodymium has no known biological role. It has a very low toxicity.

Praseodymium occurs together with other lanthanide elements in various minerals. The two main sources are monazite and bastnaesite. Praseodymium is extracted from these minerals by ion exchange and solvent extraction. Praseodymium metal is prepared by reduction with anhydrous chloride calcium.
