Elemental Analysis - Polonium (Po)

Elemental Analysis - Polonium (Po)

Polonium is a silvery gray, rare and highly volatile radioactive semi-metal. Polonium is an alpha emitter and is used as a source of alpha particles in the form of a thin film on a stainless steel disc. These are used in antistatic devices and scientific research. A single gram of polonium reaches a temperature of 500 degrees Celsius as a result of emitted alpha radiation. This property makes polonium useful as a heat source for space equipment.

Elemental Analysis - Polonium (Po)

It can be mixed or alloyed with beryllium to provide a source of neutrons.

Polonium has no known biological role. However, it is highly toxic due to its radioactivity.

Polonium is a very rare naturally occurring element. It is generally found in uranium ores, but its extraction is not economically feasible. Bismuth-209 atoms are bombarded with neutrons to obtain the bismuth-210 isotope. This isotope then decays to form polonium. All commercially produced polonium in the world comes from Russia.

Polonium is of little use to humans except for some threatening applications. Its first use was as a trigger in the atomic bomb. In commercial applications, polonium is sometimes used to remove static electricity from cameras or dust from photographic film. It is also used as a light source of heat for thermoelectric power in satellites.

In the tests and analyzes carried out in our organization, which has a wide range of technological equipment, trained and experienced staff and applies the most modern methods, national and international standards and legal regulations in force are complied with. Among the numerous tests carried out in this context, there are also polonium (Po) testing services within the framework of elemental analysis.
