Elemental Analysis - Radium (Ra)

Radium is a soft, shiny, silvery radioactive metal. Radium currently has very little use because it is a very highly radioactive element.

Elemental Analysis - Radium (Ra)

The radium-223 isotope is sometimes used to treat prostate cancer that has spread to the bones. It is used to target cancerous bone cells because bones contain calcium and radium is in the same group as calcium. Radium emits alpha particles that can kill cancerous cells.

Radium has no known biological role. However, it is extremely dangerous due to its radioactivity. However, it was once used in many everyday products, including wrist watches and toothpaste, and was thought to have healing properties until its intense radioactivity was found to cause adverse health effects.

Radium is present in trace amounts in all uranium ores and is extracted as a byproduct of uranium refining. Radium is formed by the decay of the uranium atom. There are several known isotopes of radium, but due to the rapid decay rates of most of the isotopes, there is no information about the natural abundance of radium isotopes. Today, radium is mined from spent fuel rods in nuclear reactors. Annual production of this element is less than 100 grams per year.

Our organization, equipped with extensive technological equipment and a trained and experienced staff, applies the most modern methods in the tests and analyses we conduct, adhering to both national and international standards as well as current legal regulations. Among the numerous tests performed within this scope, radium (Ra) testing services are also offered as part of elemental analysis.
