EN 1263-1 Temporary Work Equipment - Safety Nets - Part 1: Safety Requirements, Test Methods

The EN 1263-1 standard, a European standard, describes the requirements for safety nets and accessories used in construction and assembly works to protect against a deep fall, and defines test methods.

EN 1263-1 Temporary Work Equipment - Safety Nets - Part 1: Safety Requirements, Test Methods

In general, this standard is based on the performance characteristics of polypropene and polyamide fibers. It is expected that there will be no significant reduction in mechanical properties of the materials used in the nets between minus 10 degrees Celsius and plus 40 degrees Celsius.

This standard does not apply to the installation of safety nets. The installation of safety nets is regulated in the second part of this standard.

In fact, the EN 1263 standard consists of two parts under the title "Temporary work equipment - Safety nets":

  • EN 1263-1 Part 1: Safety requirements, test methods
  • EN 1263-2 Part 2: Safety rules for positioning limits

Fall protection nets are protective equipment aimed at protecting workers and equipment from falls from a height. This equipment consists of a connection made of nylon mesh or plastic material and is fixed with suitable elements to stop the person from falling.

According to the EN 1263-1 standard, safety nets are grouped according to two parameters: class and system. The class defines the dimensions of the network and the strength of the network, and refers to the type of system network support and different usage methods.

Four distinct classes have been identified for the maximum dimensions of the lattices and the characteristic energy values acting on them:

  • A1: 60 mm, 2,3 kJ
  • A2: 100 mm, 2,3 kJ
  • B1: 60mm, 4,4kJ
  • B2: 100mm, 4,4kJ

The system is specified, two for horizontal use (System S and System T) and two for vertical use (System U and System V):

  • System S safety nets are no shorter than 5 m on the short side and have a minimum surface of 35 m2.
  • System T safety nets have a smaller surface than system S.
  • System U safety nets are attached to the support rack with the appropriate rope or belt.
  • System V safety nets protect against lateral and vertical drops consisting of two levels.

Our organization also provides safety net testing services within the scope of EN 1263-1 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
