NIJ 0101.06 Ballistic Resistance of Body Armor

NIJ 0101.06 Ballistic Resistance of Body Armor

In the NIJ 0101.06 standard developed by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), the minimum performance requirements for the ballistic resistance of personal body armor for protection against gunfire are explained and test methods are defined.

NIJ 0101.06 Ballistic Resistance of Body Armor

The scope of this standard is limited to ballistic resistance only. This standard does not address threats from knives and sharp-edged tools, which are different types of threats and are covered in the NIJ 0115 Personal body armor stab resistance standard.

Body armor manufacturers and buyers use this standard to determine whether certain armor models meet the minimum performance standards and test methods defined in this standard. Ballistic tests described in this standard have their own hazards and adequate safety precautions must be taken for personnel and the environment while performing these tests.

Personal body armor falling within the scope of this standard is in five groups according to ballistic performance level: IIA, II, IIIA, III and IV. A special test class has also been defined to allow verification against threats not covered by these five standard classes:

  • Type IIA (9mm, .40 caliber S&W)
  • Type II (9mm, .357 caliber Magnum)
  • Type IIIA (.357 caliber SIG, .44 caliber Magnum)
  • Type III (rifles)
  • Type IV (armor piercing rifle)
  • special type

The NIJ 0101.06 standard sets the following criteria for each armor type: test ammunition, nominal bullet mass, required bullet velocity, required impacts per armor sample, and allowable penetration.

The NIJ 0101.06 standard is the most comprehensive and rigorous body armor compliance standard in existence today. Applies to ballistic resistant materials, including soft armor, hard armor, reclamation armor, and multi-threat armor. This standard sets extremely high requirements for the product. Bulletproof vests are tested not only dry but also wet.

Our organization also provides ballistic resistance testing services of body armor within the scope of NIJ 0101.06 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
