EN 748 Playground Equipment - Football Goals - Functional and Safety Requirements and Test Methods

The EN 748 standard, a European standard, describes the functional and safety requirements for soccer goals in four types and two sizes, and defines the test methods. This standard applies to soccer goals used for training and competition purposes in outdoor sports facilities and indoor arenas.

EN 748 Playground Equipment - Football Goals - Functional and Safety Requirements and Test Methods

The following football goals are not covered by this standard:

  • Goals with dimensions of 16579 × 5,00 and 2,00 × 7,32 meters and with a total weight of more than 2,44 kg and less than 10 kg, covered by the EN 42 standard (to the total weight of net, net fastening and other permanent attached anchor or stabilization system included)
  • Lightweight castles covered by the EN 16664 standard.

During goal stability tests, a horizontal force is applied to the crossbar to ensure that a goal is in a stable position and therefore cannot topple forward or in any direction. The force applied according to the EN 748 standard is 110 kg. According to another European standard, EN 8462, the applied force is 80 kg for junior and futsal goals and 70 kg for mini football and small-sided goals. Targets should remain constant throughout this test.

Goal legs (socket goals only) must be fixed in concrete pockets with a minimum size of 600 mm3. When the goals are removed from the slots, the pockets should be closed with a metal or plastic cover. Concrete pockets should be 40 mm below ground level.

Only castles meeting EN 748 or EN 8462 standards should be used. Wooden or homemade goal posts should never be used. Rooks must remain stationary at all times. Metal net hooks should not be used on goalposts due to high safety risks. All castles require regular inspection and maintenance. Records of inspections and maintenance should be kept and any detected faults should be repaired or replaced. Castles should have warning labels to highlight potential risks.
