ISO 12312-2 Eye and Face Protection - Sunglasses and Related Glasses - Part 2: Filters for Direct Observation of the Sun

The ISO 12312-2 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), covers all products for direct observation of the sun, such as solar eclipse monitoring. However, the following products are not covered by this standard:

ISO 12312-2 Eye and Face Protection - Sunglasses and Related Glasses - Part 2: Filters for Direct Observation of the Sun

  • Sunglasses and clips for general use for protection against sunlight
  • Glasses for protection against radiation from artificial light sources, such as those used in a solarium
  • Especially sports eye protection, eg ski goggles or other types
  • Medically prescribed sunglasses to reduce solar radiation
  • Prescription sunglasses lenses

According to the requirements described in this standard, filters must be free of defects that impair vision during use, such as bubbles, scratches, residues, opaque spots, pitting, rubbing, blistering, scaling and rippling, except for a marginal area of 5 mm wide. Metal-coated filter materials should not exhibit more than one pinhole defect with an average diameter not greater than 5 μm within any 200 mm diameter circular region.

During testing, a filter is illuminated by an intense white light source, such as a floodlight or light table, on the one hand, and viewed with a low-power magnifying glass on the other. Metal-coated filters showing visible pinhole defects are examined under a light microscope at 25x to 40x magnification. A magnifying lens with 4x to 10x magnification can be used for this test.

Filters can be assembled or unassembled. A filter, if installed, must be held securely so that it cannot be dislodged by normal use or wind gusts. The mounts can be hand-held or shaped into glasses to be worn on the face in front of the wearer's glasses or contact lenses.

The filter and assembly must be free of roughness, sharp edges, protrusions or other defects that cause discomfort during use. No part of the filter or assembly should be made of materials known to cause skin irritation.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer filter testing services for direct solar observation in accordance with the ISO 12312-2 standard, thanks to our trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
