EN 13899, a European standard, covers roller skates intended for users weighing more than 20 kg. This standard describes the safety requirements for roller skates provided by the manufacturer to reduce the risk of injury to both the user and third parties during normal use, defines test methods, and includes specifications, marking, and other information. Roller skates used by riders weighing less than 20 kg are outside the scope of this standard (essentially, these skates fall under the EN 71-1 Safety of toys – Part 1: Mechanical and physical properties standard ).

EN 13899 Inline Sporting Goods - Inline Skates - Safety Requirements and Test Methods

All types of skates require a certain level of physical fitness and safety precautions. Safety is of the utmost importance in any sport, skating is no exception. Helmets, mouth guards, elbow pads, knee pads and many other protective equipment are produced to protect skaters from injuries. Skaters of all levels always need the most comfortable, top quality and most reliable protective gear.

Roller skates are both a sport and a recreational tool. Skating rinks and skate parks have been built for roller skating, but they are also used on streets and bike paths. Traditional roller skates use 80 percent of the body's muscles and provide the body with a great cardio workout (it burns 650 calories an hour while having fun).

Safety equipment should always be used while skating. Major safety equipment includes:

  • Helmet. It descends further down the back towards the base of the skull for better protection in the event of a backward fall. It must be firmly fixed.
  • Skate. It should provide strong ankle support and be comfortable.
  • Knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards. These help prevent injuries and also soften bones in the event of a fall.
  • Light gloves. These keep your fingers safe.
  • Nozzle. A mouth guard helps protect the mouth and teeth in the event of a bump or fall.
