ASTM D149-20 Standard Test Method for Dielectric Disruption Voltage and Dielectric Strength of Solid Electrical Insulation Materials at Commercial Power Frequencies

ASTM D149-20 Standard Test Method for Dielectric Disruption Voltage and Dielectric Strength of Solid Electrical Insulation Materials at Commercial Power Frequencies

The ASTM D149-20 standard, developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), defines procedures and test methods for determining the dielectric strength of solid insulating materials at commercial power frequencies under certain conditions. Unless otherwise stated, these tests are performed at 60 Hz. However, this test method can also be performed at any frequency between 25 and 800 Hz. However, at frequencies above 800 Hz, dielectric heating is a potential problem.

This test method is suitable for use at various temperatures and in any suitable gas or liquid medium. However, it is not designed to measure the dielectric strength of materials that are fluid under test conditions. Also, it is not intended for use in determining intrinsic dielectric strength, direct voltage dielectric strength, or thermal breakdown under electrical stress. These tests are defined in the ASTM D3151 standard.

The test method described in ASTM D149-20 is commonly used to determine the dielectric breakdown voltage across the thickness of a test sample. It is also suitable for use to determine the dielectric breakdown voltage across the interface between a solid sample and the gas or liquid surrounding medium.

This test method is similar to the test method described in the IEC 243-1 standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) (IEC 243-1 Test methods for the electrical resistance of solid insulating materials - Part 1: Test at power frequencies).

The dielectric strength of an electrical insulating material is an interesting property for any application where an electric field will be present. In most cases, the dielectric strength of a material is a decisive factor in the design of the equipment in which it will be used.

This testing method is useful for process control, acceptance or research testing. However, the results obtained in most cases need to be compared and evaluated with results from other functional tests to determine the dielectric behavior of a material in a real application.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it has given for businesses in various sectors, our organization, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, is the standard for dielectric breakdown voltage and dielectric strength of solid electrical insulation materials at commercial power frequencies within the scope of ASTM D149-20 standard. It also provides testing services.
