IEC 62208 Empty Enclosures for Low Voltage Switchgear and Controllers - General Requirements

IEC 62208 Empty Enclosures for Low Voltage Switchgear and Controllers - General Requirements

The IEC 62208 standard, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), covers empty enclosures prior to incorporation of switchgear and controlgear components by the user, as provided by the switchboard manufacturer. This standard contains general definitions, classifications, specifications and test requirements for enclosures with a rated voltage not exceeding 1.000 Volts alternating current, to be used as part of switchgear and controlgear assemblies (for example, in accordance with the IEC 61439 series of standards). This standard is also suitable for 1.500 Volt direct current indoor or outdoor applications. However, certain applications may require additional requirements.

IEC 62208 Empty Enclosures for Low Voltage Switchgear and Controllers - General Requirements

In general, enclosure type definitions defined in the NEMA 250 standard prepared by the National Electricity Manufacturers Association are based on. These designations specify additional environmental requirements for conditions such as corrosion, rust, icing, oil and coolants.

This standard does not apply to enclosures covered by other specific product standards, for example the IEC 60670 series of standards. Compliance with the safety requirements of the applicable product standard is the responsibility of the assembly manufacturer.

The following important technical changes have been made in the latest update of the IEC 62208 standard:

  • Consideration of the reconstructed IEC 61439 standard series
  • Align test procedures with the latest relevant standards

In this standard application, enclosures are classified as follows:

  • Material type: insulator, metallic, combination of insulator and metallic
  • Fixing method: floor standing, wall mounting, flush mounting, pole mounting
  • Intended place: outdoor, indoor
  • Degree of protection: IP code according to IEC 60529, IK code according to IEC 62262
  • Rated insulation voltage (for enclosures made of insulating materials)

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements do not apply to enclosures covered by this standard. The IEC 61000-5-7 standard applies to the degree of protection (EM code) provided by enclosures against electromagnetic disturbances.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides empty enclosures testing services for voltage switchgear and control assemblies within the scope of IEC 62208 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
