EN IEC 60884-1 Plugs and Sockets for Household and Similar Purposes - Part 1: General Requirements

EN IEC 60884-1 Plugs and Sockets for Household and Similar Purposes - Part 1: General Requirements

The “EN IEC 60884-1 Plugs and sockets for household and similar purposes - Part 1: General requirements” standard, which is based on a European standard and subsequently published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), applies to plugs and fixed or portable sockets designed for household and similar purposes, indoors or outdoors, for AC only, with or without an earthing contact, with a rated voltage higher than 50 Volts but not exceeding 440 Volts and a rated current not exceeding 32 A.

EN IEC 60884-1 Plugs and Sockets for Household and Similar Purposes - Part 1: General Requirements

Compatible plugs and sockets, when combined, form a plug and socket system. Standard systems used worldwide are specified in the IEC/TR 60083 standard. For accessories supplied with screwless type terminals, the rated current is limited to a maximum of 16 A. This standard covers the requirements for mounting boxes necessary only for socket testing. Requirements for general-purpose mounting boxes are given in the IEC 60670-1 standard.

This standard also applies to:

  • Plugs are a part of cable sets.
  • Plugs and portable power strips are part of cable extension kits.
  • Unless otherwise specified in the standard for the device, plugs and sockets are components of a device.
  • Pilot light plugs and sockets.

This standard does not apply to:

  • Industrial plugs, sockets, and couplers.
  • Device connectors.
  • Extra low voltage plugs, fixed and portable sockets. Extra low voltage values are specified in the IEC 60364-4-41 standard.
  • Integrated fixed sockets such as fuses and automatic switches.

These standard plugs are designed to draw power from electrical outlets.

If appropriate precautions are not taken, using it in any other way may lead to unsafe conditions within the installation. When energy-generating equipment is connected to a fixed installation via plugs conforming to this standard, all safety aspects of the products and installation must be evaluated by the manufacturer of the energy-generating equipment. Plugs and sockets conforming to this standard are suitable for use in ambient temperatures that normally do not exceed 40 degrees, but whose average temperature over a 24-hour period does not exceed 35 degrees, and the lower limit of ambient air temperature is minus 5 degrees.

The EN IEC 60884-1 standard is the fundamental standard defining safety and performance requirements for the most common 2- or 3-prong plugs, sockets, connectors, and adapters used in homes and light commercial installations worldwide.

Sockets and plugs are classified according to various characteristics in this standard:

  • With or without lid
  • Protection level (IP code)
  • Installation method (recessed, surface mounted, portable)
  • Presence of pilot contact, switch, or fuse.
  • Resistance to monitoring
  • Grounding system (with or without grounding contact)

The EN IEC 60884-1 standard is important because it serves as the global safety backbone for virtually all household plugs and sockets used outside of North America and Japan. This standard is considered important for the following reasons:

  • It prevents death and injury from electric shock: It ensures proper insulation distances, shutter mechanisms (child protection), and minimum insertion/removal forces. Without this standard, poorly designed sockets can cause fingers or metal objects to come into contact with live parts, making electric shock particularly dangerous for children.
  • Prevents fires and overheating: Strict temperature rise limits are defined (maximum 45 K for pins and terminals at a full 16 A load). Mandatory glow-in-the-dark wire tests (850 degrees) and monitoring resistance prevent plastic parts from catching fire or forming conductive paths in case of overheating. Until recently, cheap and substandard sockets have been a major cause of electrical fires in many developing countries.
  • It guarantees mechanical reliability for decades: The plugs must withstand 10.000 insertion cycles, lateral tensile forces at 70 degrees, impact tests, and humidity cycling. This prevents broken pins, loose contacts, or cracked housings that can cause arcing and fire.
  • It ensures safe international trade and travel: A plug manufactured in one country and conforming to the EN IEC 60884-1 standard can safely work together with a socket and extension cord manufactured in different countries, as long as they are of the same plug type. Without this standard, each country would have very different sizes, strengths, and safety levels, making cross-border sale or use of products impossible.
  • Legal and market access requirements: In the EU, compliance with the low voltage directive or the EN IEC 60884-1 standard is mandatory, and the CE mark is required. If a product fails the EN IEC 60884-1 tests, it is impossible to market that product.

In short, the EN IEC 60884-1 standard is one of the world's most effective public safety standards. This standard saves lives, prevents billions of dollars in fire damage, and enables global electrical compliance.

For many years, our organization, with its competent and experienced staff, has been understanding the needs of its clients, providing the advanced testing services they require, and assisting in the establishment, implementation, and improvement of management systems.
