The IEC 60939 standard, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), consists of the following three subsections under the main title "Passive filter units for electromagnetic interference suppression":
The IEC 60939-1 standard deals with passive filter units for electromagnetic interference suppression for use in or associated with electronic or electrical equipment and machinery. Both single and multi-channel filters in a housing fall within the scope of this standard. This general specification defines standard terms, inspection procedures and test methods for electronic components.
The IEC 60939-2 standard applies to passive filter units for electromagnetic interference suppression that fall within the scope of general specifications. The scope of this standard is limited to passive filter units for which safety tests are appropriate. Filters conforming to this standard will be connected to mains power sources where compliance with mandatory tests is required, or used in other circuit locations where the equipment specification states that some or all of these safety tests have been performed.
The IEC 60939-3 standard covers passive filters used to reduce unwanted radio frequency signals such as noise or interference from electromagnetic sources. Both single and multi-channel filters built into a single housing or on a printed circuit board forming a compact entity are covered by this standard. This standard applies to passive filter units for electromagnetic interference suppression to which safety tests are complied with. Filters conforming to this standard shall be connected to mains supplies when compliance with mandatory testing is required or used in other circuit locations where the equipment specification specifies that some or all of these safety tests have been carried out. This standard applies to passive filter units to be connected to an alternating current.
