The IEC 62055 series of standards describe payment systems that include customer information systems, point-of-sale systems, coin holders, payment meters and the associated interfaces that exist between these entities.

The IEC 62055 standard, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), consists of the following sections under the main title of "Electricity Measurement - Payment systems":
The IEC TR 62055-21 standard provides a framework for integrating the standards into a system specification for electricity payment metering systems. This section covers the payment measurement system implementation process, general processes, general functions, data elements, system entities, and interfaces available in current payment measurement systems. The approach taken in the framework is general enough for payment measurement systems so that it is equally applicable to future systems. This standard does not cover the application of coin-operated meters in payment systems. It covers especially electricity metering payment systems. However, it is recognized that payment measurement is an established requirement in other utilities and the general framework for standardization in this section is applicable to other such utilities.
The IEC TR 62055-31 standard applies to newly manufactured, static watt-hour pay meters with accuracy classes 45 and 65 for direct connection, for measuring alternating current electrical energy consumption of a frequency in the range of 1 Hz to 2 Hz. This standard does not apply to static watt-hour pay meters where the voltage between connection terminals exceeds 600 Volts (line-to-line voltage for polyphase systems). It only applies to checkout counters for indoor applications where the checkout counter is to be installed for normal service. The functional requirements applicable to payment counters are also defined in the annex to the standard. Appendix A contains informative basic functional requirements and tests for the prepayment operating mode.
The IEC TR 62055-41 standard describes the application layer protocol of the standard transfer specification, which is used to unidirectionally transfer credit units and other management information from a point of sale (POS) system to a compatible payment counter. This standard is primarily intended for application with non-scheduled electricity payment meters using energy-based tokens, but may also have application for coin-based token systems and services other than electricity.
The IEC TR 62055-51 standard describes the physical layer protocol of the standard transfer specification for the transfer of credit units and other management information between a point-of-sale (POS) system and a compatible electricity payment meter. This standard describes the encoding of token data onto token carriers in the physical layer protocol at the POS for various types of cards, such as digital and magnetic cards, and the decoding of token data from token carriers in the physical layer protocol at the payment meter for cards such as digital and magnetic cards. This standard is intended for use by payment meter manufacturers who must accept compatible tokens, and also by POS system manufacturers who must produce compatible tokens, and should be read in conjunction with IEC 62055-41. Although this standard was developed for electricity payment systems, it also covers tokens used in other utilities such as water and gas.
In the IEC TR 62055-52 standard, a customer describes a physical layer protocol for transferring credit units and other management information between a compatible electricity payment meter. It is complementary to the application layer protocol specified in the IEC 62055-41 standard and should be used with this standard. This standard is designed for use in various payment meters developed by different manufacturers and to ensure compatibility between these products and other client devices.
