EN IEC 61537 Cable Management - Cable Tray Systems and Cable Ladder Systems

EN IEC 61537 Cable Management - Cable Tray Systems and Cable Ladder Systems

The standard “EN IEC 61537 Cable management – Cable tray systems and cable ladder systems”, developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and later published as a European standard as part of harmonization efforts, describes the requirements and test methods for cable tray systems and cable ladder systems designed for supporting and accommodating cables and possibly other electrical equipment in electrical or communication system installations. This standard also specifies that cable tray systems and cable ladder systems can be used, where required, for organizing cables in groups.

EN IEC 61537 Cable Management - Cable Tray Systems and Cable Ladder Systems

This standard does not apply to piping systems, cable tray systems, or any current-carrying components. Cable tray systems and cable ladder systems are designed to be used as supports for cables, not as housings.

Cable tray systems and cable ladder systems are widely used in electrical, communications, industrial, data center, railway, energy, and infrastructure installations to support and organize cables and sometimes other electrical equipment.

The EN IEC 61537 standard specifies the performance, construction, marking, and testing requirements for cable tray and ladder systems used for the following purposes:

  • To support and route cables (power, control, instrumentation, data and communication cables).
  • To accommodate other electrical equipment.
  • Allows for grouping/organizing cables if necessary.

This standard does not apply to piping systems, cable tray systems, or any current-carrying components. These systems are merely supports, not enclosures that provide complete mechanical protection.

The primary objective is to ensure mechanical safety, structural integrity, durability, and reliable long-term performance under various environmental and loading conditions, reducing the risk of system failure, cable damage, or safety hazards.

Systems and components are classified according to multiple criteria:

  • Material: metallic, non-metallic or composite
  • Resistance to flame spread
  • Electrical continuity characteristics (continuity/discontinuity)
  • Electrical conductivity (conductive/non-conductive)
  • Corrosion resistance: different performance levels for metallic (according to ISO standards) and non-metallic components.
  • Temperature range: minimum and maximum operating temperatures.
  • Hole in the base area (for cable channels)
  • Free floor space (for mesh channels and stairs)
  • Impact resistance (especially for non-metallic/composite systems)

The main requirements and tests included in this standard are as follows:

  • Marking and documentation: Permanent marking on products + detailed technical documentation (including safe working load, SWL).
  • Dimensions and structural requirements.
  • Mechanical properties (this is practically the most important part):
  • Safe working load (SWL): The maximum uniformly distributed load that the system is stated to be able to safely support.
  • Comprehensive load/deflection tests in various configurations:
  • Multiple openings (the most common real-world setup)
  • Single interval
  • Extending horizontally in the horizontal plane
  • Extending horizontally in the vertical plane
  • Various test types with specific support distances, load application methods, and deflection limits.
  • Other performance aspects include impact resistance, corrosion resistance, electrical continuity (where specified), and flame propagation behavior.

In modern installations (especially high-density data centers, heavy industrial facilities, tunnels, rail systems, and critical infrastructure), cable trays/ladders bear significant loads. A failure can lead to cable damage, fire spread risks, downtime, or safety incidents.

Compliance with the EN IEC 61537 standard ensures the following:

  • Internationally recognized proof of performance.
  • Reliable SWL values for accurate design.
  • Standardized testing provides a fair comparison between manufacturers.
  • Improved long-term reliability and security.

Many leading manufacturers test and certify their cable ladder/tray products according to this standard. When selecting, designing, or installing cable management systems, one should always consult the manufacturer's performance declaration based on the EN IEC 61537 standard and verify that the declared safe working load (SWL) matches the actual installation conditions (span lengths, cable weight, supports, environment, etc.).

The EN IEC 61537 standard is necessary because cable tray and cable ladder systems are critical structural supports in modern electrical, communications, industrial, data center, railway, energy, and infrastructure installations, and their failure can have serious consequences. Without a standardized international framework like EN IEC 61537, the following would occur:

  • Inconsistent performance between manufacturers and products (designers, specifiers, installers, and end-users cannot reliably compare or trust the stated load capacities).
  • Unforeseen security risks stemming from poorly designed or poorly tested systems.
  • Lack of a common basis for mechanical strength, durability, corrosion resistance, or environmental suitability (leading to incompatible installations, disputes, and higher long-term failure rates).

The main reasons why this standard is considered important are:

  • Prevention of structural collapse and overloading.
  • Ensuring reliable safe working load (SWL) values.
  • Addressing environmental and long-term resilience.
  • Ensuring electrical safety and system integrity.
  • Ensuring global compliance, certification and conformity.
  • Reducing overall project risk and cost.

In short, the EN IEC 61537 standard is designed to transform a weak point in electrical infrastructure into a reliably designed, predictable, and safe component. It protects people, property, continuity of operations, and the significant investments made in modern power/communication networks.

For many years, our organization, with its competent and experienced staff, has been understanding the needs of its clients, providing the advanced testing services they require, and assisting them in the establishment, implementation, and improvement of management systems. Within this framework, we also provide testing services compliant with the EN IEC 61537 standard.
