The standard “EN IEC 61243-1 Live operation - Voltage detectors - Part 1: Capacitive type for voltages exceeding 1 kV AC”, which is based on a European standard and subsequently published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), applies to portable voltage detectors, with or without an internal power supply, for use in electrical systems with voltages from 1 kV to 800 kV AC and frequencies of 50 Hz or 60 Hz.

This standard applies only to capacitive voltage detectors used in contact with the bare part to be tested, either as a complete device including the insulating element or as a separate device that can be adapted to an insulating rod not covered by this standard. Other types of voltage detectors are not covered by this standard. Self-stage voltage detectors (formally multi-stage voltage detectors) are not covered by this standard.
In overhead line systems of electric railways (Annex B) and in systems without a neutral reference, certain restrictions or official prohibitions apply to the use of switchgear designed according to the IEC 62271 standard series due to insulation coordination. In systems without a neutral reference, the insulation level is adapted to the maximum possible voltage to ground.
Products designed and manufactured according to this standard contribute to user safety, provided they are used by trained personnel in accordance with the hot melt sealing process and usage instructions.
Unless otherwise specified, all voltages defined in this standard refer to phase-to-phase voltage values for three-phase systems. In other systems, the applicable phase-to-phase or phase-to-ground voltages are used to determine the operating voltage.
The EN IEC 61243-1 standard is one of the most important international standards for professionals working in or near live electrical installations. This standard defines the requirements and test methods for capacitive voltage detectors (voltage presence indicator devices or VPIS) used to verify the presence or absence of operating voltage in medium and high voltage systems (above 1 kV AC, typically 52 kV or higher depending on the design).
Every year, thousands of electrical accidents occur because workers mistakenly believe a circuit has been de-energized. A reliable voltage detector, compliant with the EN IEC 61243-1 standard, significantly reduces this risk by ensuring clear and unambiguous indication of live parts before any work begins. This standard is globally accepted and has become a legal requirement in many countries for equipment used in live or dead work verification.
Essentially, the scope of the EN IEC 61243-1 standard is as follows:
The basic technical requirements of this standard are as follows:
Between these two thresholds, the detector should give a clear open (voltage present) signal. Below the Ut1 value, it should be reliably closed.
The key changes in this latest revision of the standard are as follows:
Consequently, the EN IEC 61243-1 standard remains the gold standard for portable voltage detection above 1 kV. Compliance is not simply about meeting specifications, but about providing a reliable last line of defense against one of the most common causes of serious accidents.
For many years, our organization, with its competent and experienced staff, has been understanding the needs of its clients, providing the advanced testing services they require, and assisting in the establishment, implementation, and improvement of management systems. Within this framework, we also provide testing services to businesses in accordance with the "EN IEC 61243-1 Live operation - Voltage detectors - Part 1: Capacitive type for use with voltages exceeding 1 kV AC" standard.
