IEC 60238 Edison Screw Holders

IEC 60238 Edison Screw Holders

The IEC 60238 standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) describes the requirements for Edison threaded E14, E27 and E40 sockets designed for connection to the supply of lamps and semi-luminaries only. It also applies to switched sockets only for use in alternating current circuits where the operating voltage does not exceed 250 Volts root square mean.

This standard also applies to Edison threaded E5 sockets designed for connecting series-connected lamps to the power supply with an operating voltage not exceeding 25 Volts for indoor use, and Edison threaded E10 sockets designed for connecting series-connected lamps to the power supply with an operating voltage not exceeding 60 Volts for indoor or outdoor use. It also applies to built-in E10 sockets for connecting single lamps to the power supply.

This standard covers sockets other than Edison threaded sockets designed for connecting lamps in series to the supply, so far as reasonably applied. This type of socket is used, for example, in Christmas tree lighting chains. As far as reasonably applicable, this standard also covers adapters.

This standard is based on the following data for lamps for general lighting service:

  • E14 caps are used for lamps with a current not exceeding 2 Amps
  • E27 caps are used for lamps with a current not exceeding 4 Amps
  • E40 caps are used for lamps with a current not exceeding 16 or 130 Amps if the nominal voltage of the supply does not exceed 32 Volts.

In cases where sockets are used in luminaires, the maximum operating temperatures are described in the IEC 60598 standard.

This standard also covers sockets that are wholly or partially integrated into a luminaire or intended to be mounted in appliances. For all other requirements, such as protection against electric shock in the terminals or lamp cover area, the requirements of the relevant device standard are followed, and after being added to the appropriate equipment, this equipment is tested according to its own standards.

This standard covers sockets to be used indoors or outdoors in residential and industrial lighting installations.

Our organization also provides testing services for Edison screw sockets within the scope of IEC 60238 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
