EN 14683 Medical Face Mask Tests

The EN 14683 standard, a European standard, describes the requirements for medical face masks and provides test methods. This standard has also been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the title TS EN 14683+AC Medical face masks - Requirements and test methods.

EN 14683 Medical Face Mask Tests

This standard includes the construction, design, performance requirements and test methods of medical face masks that try to prevent the transmission of infective agents from employees to patients during surgical procedures and other medical settings with similar requirements.

A medical face mask with an adequate microbial barrier is also effective in reducing the emission of infective agents from the mouth and nose of an asymptomatic carrier or a patient with clinical symptoms. This standard does not apply only to masks for personal protection of personnel. According to this standard, surgical masks are equipment that forms a barrier to limit the passage of an infectious agent between hospital staff and patients and covers the mouth, nose and chin.

The following tests are carried out in advanced laboratories to classify medical face masks:

  • Bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE)
  • Breathability (Delta P)
  • Splash resistance (synthetic blood)
  • Microbial cleaning
  • Biocompatibility

In the test, analysis, measurement and evaluation studies carried out in our organization, national and international standards and applicable legal regulations are complied with and reliable and impartial results are obtained. Among the numerous tests carried out in this context, there are also EN 14683 medical face masks testing services.
