ISO 6710 Disposable Containers for Human Venous Blood Sample Collection

ISO 6710 Disposable Containers for Human Venous Blood Sample Collection

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard "ISO 6710 Disposable containers for human venous blood specimen collection" describes the requirements and test methods for evacuated and non-evacuated disposable venous blood specimen containers. However, this standard does not specify requirements for blood collection needles, needle holders, blood culture containers, or arterial blood gas collection devices that can be used with venous blood.

Materials used in the tests include:

  • The tube should be made of a material from which the contents are clearly visible upon visual inspection, but exposure to ultraviolet light or visible light may cause degradation of the contents.
  • If a vessel is specifically designed for the determination of a specific element or substance, the maximum level of the element/substance in the vessel and the analytical method used should be stated by the manufacturer in supporting literature or on the label or packaging. For the determination of specific metals and other specified substances, the formulation of the closure material should be such that it does not interfere with the determination, thereby affecting the results. For highly sensitive determinations (e.g., those using fluorimetry) or tests of limited use, agreed-upon interference limits may not be available. In such cases, the laboratory should establish a blank value and consult the manufacturer.
  • The container must be free of foreign matter upon visual inspection.

Towing volume:

  • The water volume must be within plus/minus 10 percent of the shrinkage volume when tested according to the methods specified in Appendices A and B. If plus/minus 10 percent of the shrinkage volume is not met during shelf life, the manufacturer must ensure that accurate results are obtained.

design:

  • When leak testing is performed according to the methods specified in Annex C or another equivalent method, the cap shall not loosen during mixing and no fluorescence shall be detected in the water in which the container is immersed.
  • If a cap is intended to be removed, it should be designed so that it can be removed by grasping it with the fingers or by mechanical means, thus avoiding touching any part of the cap that may come into contact with the sample.
  • In design, attention should be paid to ensuring compatibility with handling systems, processes, preanalytical and analytical automation.

Structure:

  • The container containing the sample shall not break, crack or leak when centrifuged at a relative centrifugal force of 3 000 g or the value specified by the manufacturer for the intended use, when tested in accordance with the method specified in Annex D.
  • Upon visual inspection, the container should not have any sharp edges, protrusions, or surface roughness that could accidentally cut, puncture, or abrade the user's skin.

Sterility and special microbiological conditions:

  • For emptied containers, the interior must be sterile if not used. The interior of the container and any accessories or additives must be subjected to a validated process designed to ensure sterility.
  • For unemptied containers, if a manufacturer claims that the unopened and unused container or the entire container interior is sterile or has a specific microbiological status, the container interior and any accessories or additives must be subjected to a valid treatment designed to ensure this claim.
  • For unevacuated containers containing microbe-promoting additives such as trisodium citrate or citrate phosphate dextrose adenine, the solution must be subjected to a valid treatment to remove or render inviable microbes in the additive and the interior of the container.

Additives:

  • The specified nominal additive quantity should be within the range specified in Annex E.
  • For containers containing additives, mixing should be achieved by using a free-space bubble or other physical method to facilitate mixing. This standard does not specify a verification procedure for adequate mixing of the blood sample.
  • For coagulation testing, empty space in vessels should not affect analytical results. The manufacturer must assess the risk associated with empty space in correctly filled vessels.

Marking and labeling:

  • Non-transparent labels should not completely surround the tubes.
  • The marking and labeling on the container must adhere throughout the shelf life under the storage conditions specified by the manufacturer.
  • The information that must be placed on the outer surface of each primary package is included in the standard.
  • If a container is specifically provided for the detection of a particular substance, the maximum level of contamination with that substance should be stated on the label, primary packaging or supporting information.
  • If a container contains a liquid additive, its volume should be stated on the label, primary packaging, or supporting information.
  • The following information is included in the standard directly on the containers or labels.
  • If the container is intended to be stored or used under specific conditions, this must be clearly stated on the container or label or in supporting documentation on the primary packaging.

Container definition:

  • Containers should be identified by the letter code for additives and accessories provided in the table titled "Letter codes for identifying additives and accessories" and the ingredient description or product name. If additives and accessories other than those listed in the table are present, containers should be identified by the additive description or product name. Recommended color codes for identifying additives and accessories are provided in Appendix F.

In medical diagnostics, the accurate collection and transport of blood samples forms the basis of countless laboratory analyses, from routine checkups to critical illness diagnosis. Ensuring these samples remain uncontaminated, stable, and viable is crucial for patient safety and diagnostic reliability. The ISO 6710 standard includes stringent requirements and test methods for both vacuum and non-vacuum disposable containers used for venous blood sampling. This standard plays a vital role in standardizing global practices, minimizing errors, and enhancing the integrity of blood samples.

The ISO 6710 standard specifically addresses single-use containers designed for the collection of human venous blood samples, covering both vacuum-sealed (vacuum-sealed) tubes and non-vacuum options. It addresses the entire lifecycle of these devices, from their design and materials to their performance under real-world conditions. However, the standard intentionally excludes components such as blood collection needles, needle holders, blood culture bottles, and arterial blood gas syringes.

In an era of rising healthcare costs and diagnostic precision, ISO 6710 compliance isn't just about regulatory compliance; it's a safeguard against diagnostic errors, which impact one-fifth of laboratory results due to pre-analytical issues like incorrect collection. It reduces variability by standardizing containers, increases traceability through unique device identification, and supports point-of-care testing in remote areas.

Ultimately, the ISO 6710 standard ensures that the humble blood collection tube meets the highest standards of safety and efficacy. As diagnostics evolve with genomic and AI-powered analyses, compliance with this standard is vital to maintaining trust in laboratory medicine.
