Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Reprocessing Tests

The COVID-19 outbreak has caused a lack of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment); As a result, there are few options left in hospitals and healthcare facilities, one of these options; reusing equipment that will never be reused.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Reprocessing Tests

EUROLABhas prepared a testing plan to assist innovators trying to validate reprocessing solutions:

Disinfection / Sterilization

Respirators or masks undergo a disinfection or sterilization process to remove the virus and other potential contaminants:

  • Evaporated hydrogen peroxide (VHP)  Masks are subjected to a specific cycle in a VHP sterilizer (VPRO 1 VPRO 60)
  • Heat  dry-heat disinfection (70 ° -100 ° C)
  • UV light at a certain intensity and time to ultraviolet light exposure (254-260nm)
  • Chemical  spray disinfectants (soaking or wiping that could damage the liquid, etc.)
  • Radiation  exposure to gamma radiation

Functionality Filtering / Breathability Test

Following the disinfection / sterilization reprocessing cycle, it is necessary to reassess the functional properties of the filter media:

  • Respirators:  NaCl, DOP, valve leak and inhalation / exhalation tests
  • Surgical Masks:  Synthetic Blood, BFE, PFE, breathability, Flammability

Biosafety Test

Following the disinfection / sterilization reprocessing cycle, it is necessary to reassess biosafety for the user:

  • cytotoxicity  MEM Elution or Agar Plating
  • Toxicological Risk Assessment

- or -

  • cytotoxicity  MEM or Agar Overlay
  • Irritation  In vivo contact dermatitis
  • Sensitivity  In vivo hypersensitivity
