Hypoallergenic Tests in Medical Products

Hypoallergenic Tests in Medical Products

Hypoallergenic means commonly devoid of allergens. In fact, hypoallergenic means a less likely allergic reaction, but it doesn't mean there isn't any allergic reaction. In the United States, there are no standards published by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to prove that a product is hypoallergenic. For this reason, you should not rely only on the hypoallergenic label on the product. Most consumers today believe that a product labeled as hypoallergenic will not cause an allergic reaction, but this is not entirely true.

Hypoallergenic Tests in Medical Products

Hypoallergenic cosmetics are products that manufacturers claim to produce less allergic reactions than other cosmetic products. Consumers with hypersensitive skin, and even those with normal skin, are led to believe that these products will be gentler to their skin than non-hypoallergenic cosmetics.

A similar situation applies to medical products. People with allergies are likely looking for products labeled as hypoallergenic to avoid triggering an allergic reaction. Hypoallergenic means a product contains only a few allergy-producing substances known as allergens. However, because there is no agreed-upon scientific or legal definition of the term, the word hypoallergenic on a label does not necessarily protect the individual. Cosmetic or medical companies can put a hypoallergenic label on their products without meeting any established standards.

People have varying degrees of sensitivity to allergy-causing substances (i.e. allergens). Some people may not be impressed with a certain content at all. Some people may feel a little itchy or uncomfortable.

All kinds of allergens are found in the natural environment. These include plant pollen, dust mites, pet dander, insect bites, odors, and a wide variety of foods. An allergic attack can range from mild to life-threatening. A mild allergic attack can cause itching, watery or runny eyes, sneezing, nasal congestion and headache. In the worst case of allergic reaction, the body goes into a state known as anaphylactic shock.
