IEC 60601 Medical Electrical Equipment

The IEC 60601 standard, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), is a widely accepted set of criteria for electrical medical equipment, and compliance with the IEC 60601-1 standard has become a requirement for the commercialization of electrical medical equipment in many countries. Today, many companies producing medical electrical equipment consider compliance with the IEC 60601-1 standard a requirement for most markets.

The IEC 60601 set of standards, which is a set of technical standards, is based on the safety and basic performance of medical electrical equipment. It has been regularly updated and restructured for nearly 50 years since its first publication. Today, the IEC 60601 standard consists of a general standard, around 10 complementary standards, and around 80 specific standards.

For certain types of medical electrical equipment, these requirements are either supplemented or replaced by the specific requirements of a warranty or a particular standard.
