ISO 10079 Medical Aspiration Equipment

ISO 10079 Medical Aspiration Equipment

The ISO 10079 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), consists of the following subsections under the main title of "Medical aspiration equipment":

ISO 10079 Medical Aspiration Equipment

  • ISO 10079-1 Part 1: Electrically powered suction equipment
  • ISO 10079-2 Part 2: Manually operated suction equipment
  • ISO 10079-3 Part 3: Aspiration equipment powered by vacuum or positive pressure gas source
  • ISO 10079-4 Part 4: General requirements

The ISO 10079-1 standard describes safety and performance requirements for electrically powered medical and surgical suction equipment. This standard applies to equipment used in healthcare facilities such as hospitals, home care of patients, and in the field and transportation. This standard does not cover:

  • Central power supply (with vacuum / compressed air generation), piping systems and wall connections of vehicles and buildings
  • End parts such as aspiration catheters, drains, curettes, Yankauer suckers, and suction tips
  • syringes
  • dental aspiration equipment
  • Anesthetic gas cleaning systems
  • laboratory vacuum
  • Autotransfusion systems
  • Mucus extractors, including neonatal mucus extractors
  • Suction equipment where the collection container is downstream of the vacuum pump
  • Ventouse (birth) equipment
  • Aspiration equipment marked for endoscopic use only
  • smoke extraction systems

The ISO 10079-2 standard describes safety and performance requirements for medical, manually operated aspiration equipment for oropharyngeal aspiration. This standard covers equipment that can be operated by foot, hand or both. The annex to the standard provides a diagram for typical systems and shows the three parts of this standard (Annex C). This standard has additional requirements for suction equipment for use in the field or in transport.

The ISO 10079-3 standard describes safety and performance requirements for medical suction equipment powered by a vacuum or positive pressure gas source that creates the venturi suction. This standard applies to equipment connected to medical gas pipeline systems or cylinders and venturi attachments. Equipment can be standalone or part of an integrated system.

The ISO 10079-4 standard describes the general requirements for medical aspiration equipment common to all parts of the ISO 10079 series. Equipment outside the scope of this standard is as described in chapter one.

Essentially, medical aspiration equipment is used to keep the airway open, collect samples for disease diagnosis, prevent potential infections, and prevent pulmonary aspiration.

Our organization also provides testing services for medical aspiration equipment within the scope of ISO 10079 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
