Developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), the ASTM E1174-21 standard is designed to determine the effectiveness of antimicrobial handwashes for reducing transient microbial skin flora when used in a handwashing procedure. This test method is used to evaluate topical antimicrobial handwash formulations. The application of this test method requires compliance with regulations for the protection of human subjects.
This test method is used to test the antimicrobial efficacy of handwash formulations. Test formulations are generally designed for frequent use to reduce transient bacterial flora on hands. Alcohol-based handrubs and other permanent formulations used without the aid of water should be tested using the test method defined in ASTM E2755.
This test methodIt was designed to evaluate how effectively sanitary handwashing inactivates transient bacteria on all surfaces of the hands and fingers, using a process that simulates bacterial exposure and handwashing use in indoor environments. This method can be used in place of the ASTM E2276 test method, which uses only fingertips for testing and does not involve a realistic hand-rubbing step. The method is specifically designed for hand washes that require water for the product to lather and rise.
This test is performed using the healthy hands of people who have not used antimicrobial products for at least one week before the test. After the first cleaning wash, hands are thoroughly contaminated with a test microorganism such as serratia marcescens or escherichia coli and the initial microorganism count is determined. The sample handwash product is then applied to the contaminated hands. The average number of microorganisms recovered after each test is calculated. The effectiveness of handwashing is determined by comparing the number of microorganisms recovered from contaminated hands after use of the antiseptic product with the number recovered from contaminated hands that have not been exposed to a handwashing product.
Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides standard testing services for the evaluation of the effectiveness of handwashing formulations for healthcare personnel within the scope of ASTM E1174-21 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
