LAB Color Analysis

The CIELAB color space, also called L*A*B*, is a color space defined by the International Commission on Lighting. This coding expresses color using three values:

• L* for perceptual lightness
• A* and B* for the four unique colors of human vision (red, green, blue and yellow)

CIELAB is designed as a perceptually uniform field, where a given numerical change corresponds to a similar perceived change in color. While the L*A*B* area is not truly perceptually uniform, it is used in industry to detect small color differences.

In the L*A*B* color space, L* represents lightness, and A* and B* are chromaticity coordinates. A* and B* are color directions: +A* is the red axis, -A* is the green axis, +B* is the yellow axis, and -B* is the blue axis. The area around the center represents achromatic colors, and color saturation increases as you move outwards.

The A* axis runs from left to right. A color measurement movement in the +A direction indicates a shift towards red. Along the B* axis, the +B movement represents a shift towards yellow. The central L* axis shows L = 0 (black or total absorption) at the bottom. In the center of this plane is neutral or gray.

CIELAB or CIE L*A*B* is a device-independent three-dimensional color space that allows accurate measurement and comparison of all perceptible colors using three color values. In this color space, the numerical differences between values ​​roughly correspond to the amount of variation people see between colors.

In short, the CIE color model is a mapping system that uses the combination of three color values ​​close to red / green / blue drawn in three dimensions in space. When these values ​​are combined, every color that the human eye can perceive can be reproduced.

The CIE color model was first created in 1931 to map all the colors perceived by the human eye. It is designed independently of any technology capable of presenting color, so it is considered the most accurate color model.
