Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) and REACH

Substances that have serious and often irreversible effects on human health and the environment are defined as substances of very high concern identification (SVCH). If a substance is identified as such, it must be included in the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) permit list.

Both the European Union countries and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), in short, the registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemicals known as the REACH directive, by preparing a file in accordance with the requirements specified in the annex of the directive, it is of high importance. may propose a substance to be identified as a substance presenting (SVHC).

This designation of a substance as SVHC is based on its hazard properties.

The REACH directive obliges companies that manufacture a product and importers to report that the products contain substances of very high concern (SVHC) above 0,1 percent by weight, and to report this and give instructions regarding the safe use of the product.

Essentially, the obligations of manufacturers and importers in terms of REACH SVHC compliance are determined as follows:

• Determine if products contain any substance of very high concern (SVHC) exceeding 0,1 percent by weight of the product
• To disclose the presence of such substances in products upon request from consumers within 45 days
• Ensuring environmental compatibility and safety of products

The candidate list of substances of very high concern, as of January 2022, contains 223 chemical substances and compounds that could harm humans or the environment. The REACH directive's candidate list of SVHCs is published twice a year at the discretion of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). The SVHC list is essentially a candidate list and does not mean that a substance is prohibited from being added to it. However, if a substance is added to the REACH list, it cannot enter the European Union market or be used after a certain date unless it has been authorized for its specific use or is exempted from use authorization.
