Turbine oil is gas turbine oil, steam turbine oil and similar oils that are widely used in reduction gears, sliding bearings and hydraulic control systems of connected units. The main functions of turbine oil are cooling, speed regulation and lubrication. Turbine oil is an oil with good rust and corrosion resistance, good antifoaming and air evacuation, good water separation, good stability and suitable viscosity.
For example, the main features of gas turbine oil are that it has energy saving and power properties, is exposed to a high temperature surface during operation, mixes with air, is pumped at a significant rate, circulated and used under high pressure. Therefore, gas turbine oil has superior high temperature oxidation stability and wear resistance than steam turbine oil.
According to a study of industrial turbine lubricants, oil problems are the cause of about one-fifth of all mandatory turbine outages. Among the various systems that cause deterioration within the turbine system, oxidation and thermal degradation of the oil during operation are the leading ones. Blends of high performance gas combustion turbine oil, combined cycle turbine oil, steam turbine oil, hydroelectric turbine oil and environmentally friendly turbine oil are prepared to protect parts of the most demanding machinery.
Turbine oil formulations are fairly simple. In general, the base oil is a mixture of ingredients such as corrosion inhibitors, oxidation inhibitors, defoamers and emulsifiers. The base oil is essentially 97 percent or more of the turbine oil formula. Low levels of additives are added to the base oil to protect both the oil and turbine parts. Additives are selected to provide the expected performance from the turbine. However, many new turbine oils are formulated with base oils that have been refined with newer techniques.
Water, heat, pollution, operating hours and maintenance practices have a significant impact on turbine oil life. For this reason, it is not possible to know the turbine oil life expectancy in gas turbine applications, although extensive estimates of 5-15 years are given.
Our organization also provides turbine oil testing services with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
