Hexavalent chromium (hexavalent chromium) is a dangerous man-made compound found in various industrial processes. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) estimates that around 560 workers in the United States are potentially exposed to Cr(VI). Employees breathe hexavalent chromium in the air as dust, smoke or mist while doing their jobs.

Hexavalent chromium is used in the manufacture of chromate powders, pigments, chromic acid, paints or coatings. Workers are also exposed to this compound when working near chrome electroplating, welding on stainless steel, or applying and removing paints or coatings containing chromate. Skin exposure occurs during direct handling of hexavalent chromium-containing compound solutions, coatings and cements.
Hexavalent chromium exposure is dangerous. Prolonged inhalation of hexavalent chromium in the air causes lung cancer. In addition to its carcinogenic properties, exposure to hexavalent chromium leads to a host of other adverse health consequences. Effects on the respiratory tract range from irritation to damage to the throat, nose and lungs. Direct contact with chromate powder or chromic acid causes permanent eye damage.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has published the following three standards to describe the requirements and test methods for hexavalent chromium exposure:
All of these standards cover requirements for exposure determination, preferred exposure control methods, respiratory protection, protective clothing and equipment, hygiene areas and practices, and medical surveillance. The allowable exposure limit for hexavalent chromium and its compounds in these standards is 5 micrograms per cubic meter of air, on an eight-hour time-weighted average. The action level is 2.5 micrograms per cubic meter of air on an eight-hour time-weighted average.d.
