While testing, the hands of volunteers are artificially contaminated with test organisms. The number of test organisms released from fingertips into sampling fluids is assessed before and after hygienic handrub. The resulting value represents a measurement for the antimicrobial activity of the product under test. This test is usually repeated on 18 to 22 volunteers to provide the necessary precision. To compensate for external effects, it is compared with the reduction achieved with a reference handrub performed with the same volunteers on the same day and under comparable environmental conditions. A suitable neutralizer is verified prior to testing. The neutralizer is used as a sampling fluid for the recovery of test organisms after hygienic hand scrubbing to neutralize or suppress bactericidal or bacteriostatic activity in sampling fluids.
