Fluorotelomer Alcohols (FTOH) and Fluorotelomer Acrylates (FTA) Analysis

Fluorotelomer Alcohols (FTOH) and Fluorotelomer Acrylates (FTA) Analysis

Fluorothelomer alcohols are volatile and are widely detected in air. It is still under investigation because of their potential to degrade into environmental pollutants. Fluorothelomer alcohols (FTOH) are also used as intermediates in the production of surfactants.

Fluorotelomer Alcohols (FTOH) and Fluorotelomer Acrylates (FTA) Analysis

Fluorothelomer alcohols are biodegradable to perfluorinated carboxylic acids that persist in the environment and are found in toxic populations. These have recently been referred to as precursors of acids. These compounds are widely used in textile, leather and paper products.

Fluorothelomer alcohols (FTOH) are widely used substances detected even in remote parts of the world. Appropriate sampling techniques are needed for the determination of FTOH in the atmosphere.

Fluorothelomer acrylates (FTA) is a monomer used in the manufacture of fluorinated polymers and is widely available in the atmosphere. Fluorothelomer-based polymers have wide commercial uses in the textile industry primarily because of their stain-repellent properties. The largest commercial category of polyfluorinated products is fluorotelomer acrylate-based polymers. Similar to fluorotelomere alcohols (FTOH), it is released into the environment as residues from commercial fluorotelomer-based polymer products.

Fluorothelomer-based polymers are used as oil and water repellent in consumer products. However, fluorotelomer alcohols and acrylates (FTOHs and FTAs) remaining from fluorotelomer-based polymers are recognized as possible precursors of bioaccumulative and potentially toxic perfluorocarboxylic acids, and their wide use, particularly in textiles, raises environmental concerns.

Traditionally, determination of fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOH) has been carried out using single quadrupole gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in chemical ionization mode. Although chemical ionization reaches the limits of sensitive detection, it is avoided because of the higher maintenance and operating cost than electron ionization systems. In addition, electron ionization is a more comprehensive analytical solution than chemical ionization in applications.

Fluorotelomer alcohols are important polyfluorinated raw materials that belong to the general category of perfluoroalkyl substances. These substances have received a great deal of attention recently due to their persistence and global presence in the environment.

Our organization also provides fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOH) and fluorotelomer acrylates (FTA) analysis services with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
