ISO 20433 Leather - Color Fastness Tests - Color Fastness to Cracking

In the ISO 20433 standard developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), test methods are defined in order to determine the amount of color transferred from the colored leather surface to other surfaces by rubbing with a white cotton cloth. According to this standard, two test methods are described, one with a dry scouring pad and the other with a wet scouring pad. These test methods are applicable to all types of colored leather. Surface treatments as well as leather processing affect the degree of color transfer. Therefore, test methods are applied before and after these processes.

ISO 20433 Leather - Color Fastness Tests - Color Fastness to Cracking

The cracking test is applied to show the color of a leather product or material's resistance to rubbing and staining. Special devices are used in these tests to determine the color fastness to cracking.

When two skins rub against each other, there may be a transfer of color from one to the other. This effect is accepted. and under these conditions testing should be done to recognize poor color fastness and color transfer. The assessment is made by making a judgment about the color evident in the reference coating fabric and the gray scales.

Color fastness rating is a means of assessing the change in color of a substrate or its transfer from a substrate to an adjacent reference material, multifibre color, during the test methods described in that standard. Grading is usually done using gray scales and reported on a scale of 1 to 5. Grade 1 indicates a serious change, while grade 5 indicates no visible change. With the color fastness rating, color change and color staining are evaluated.

It is undesirable to transfer the dye from the surface of a dyed or printed fabric (a leather product) by rubbing onto another fabric or leather surface. The more color transferred, the more the leather sinks. The situation is not different in cracking. Color fastness determines the amount of color transferred from the colored leather surface to other surfaces by rubbing.

Our organization also provides color fastness testing services against cracking for leather products and materials, within the scope of ISO 20433 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
