ASTM E88-11 Standard Practice for Sampling Non-Ferrous Metals and Alloys in Cast Form for Determining Chemical Composition

ASTM E88-11 Standard Practice for Sampling Non-Ferrous Metals and Alloys in Cast Form for Determining Chemical Composition

The ASTM E88-11 standard, published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), defines a practice for sampling in castings to determine the chemical composition of non-ferrous metals and alloys, excluding aluminum, for remelting or mechanical processing. Copper and copper alloys are tested according to another ASTM standard (ASTM E255-07 Standard practice of sampling copper and copper alloys to determine chemical composition).

Selecting the right parts of the material and preparing a representative sample from these parts are necessary prerequisites for any analysis. The analysis results are inaccurate if the sample does not truly represent the average composition of the material from which it was selected. The heat sample and analysis can be considered representative of the metal composition, if the buyer and the manufacturer have agreed between them. In such cases, each batch has to be properly identified by the temperatures from which it is made.

This application is not intended to cover general sampling principles applicable to non-ferrous metals in cast form and is not intended to replace existing specification requirements for sampling a particular material.

ASTM E88-11 standard practice covers requirements for Halon 1301 or the halogenated hydrocarbon compound bromotrifluoromethane as a fire extinguishing agent. Firefighting equipment or equipment using Halon 1301, conditions of use of such equipment and storage or shipping conditions of Halon 1301 are not addressed in this standard. Separate tests should be performed for material purity, methanol impurity, acidity, water content, halogen ion content, non-volatile residue, suspended matter and residue, and gases that are stationary or non-absorbable in the vapor phase.

Ingots, plates and similar materials selected for the preparation of the sample for chemical analysis must be cleaned and free of lime, dirt, oil, grease and the like while performing the test for compliance with the specifications.

Our organization, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it has given for businesses in various sectors, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, within the scope of ASTM E88-11 standard, sampling of non-ferrous metals and alloys in cast form for determination of chemical composition is standard. It also provides testing services.
