Types of firefighting foam used in the past by the US military, local fire departments, and airports to combat oil and gasoline fires also contain PFAS. These chemical compounds are water-soluble and per/polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from firefighting foam, production areas, landfills, spills, factories and other releases leach into surface soils over time. From here, it mixes with groundwater or surface water and contaminates drinking water. On the other hand, its traces have also been found in rivers, lakes, fish and wildlife.
PFAS remains in the environment for a long time and is not easily degraded. As such, it is quite common in soil, water, air and food. Some PFASs accumulate in the food chain.
Exposure occurs when products containing PFAS are used, or when contaminated food is consumed, or when water is drunk. In this case, these chemicals accumulate in the body and cause health problems. Exposure to high levels of certain per/polyfluoroalkyl substances can cause developmental effects, thyroid, liver, kidneys, certain hormones and immune system disorders in infants, even cancer.
Discussions about PFAS or perfluorinated chemicals have increased in recent years. This group today consists of more than five thousand man-made chemical compounds. Since the 1940s, these chemicals have been widely used in many products used in daily life. For example, non-stick cookware, stain and water repellent products, dental floss, cleaning products, cosmetics, food containers and fire extinguishing foam contain these chemicals. Concerns about these chemicals are increasing.
