Streptococcus pyogenes is a gram-positive, spherical and facultative anaerobic bacterium. This type of bacteria grows in long chains against grape-like clusters. Streptococcus pyogenes, known as flesh-eating bacteria, is the most pathogenic bacteria of all species. Antigen A is located on the cell wall of this microbe and can cause sites of beta hemolysis. Beta hemolysis is the complete breakdown of erythrocytes and the release of hemoglobin. This bacterium also contains protein F, which gives it the strength to adhere to epithelial cells along the respiratory tract.
Streptococcus pyogenes infection usually starts on the surface of the skin or throat and then spreads deeper. Adhesion proteins allow streptococcus pyogenes to bind strongly to host cell surfaces and subsequently invade epithelial cells. The versatility of this bacterium makes it difficult to develop a vaccine to stop the infection, but remains extremely sensitive to penicillin. Symptoms include fever, severe pain, dizziness, and a red rash at the wound site. These cause diseases such as sore throat and scarlet fever.
As an opportunistic pathogen that normally lives on the skin, disinfection of this microorganism is critical because of its wide variety of diseases and its prevalence. Streptococcus pyogenes is difficult to disinfect, but sensitive to low-level disinfectants.
Streptococcus pyogenes are facultative anaerobes, meaning they can survive with and without oxygen, but most facultative anaerobes prefer aerobic conditions and require somewhat complex environment for growth.
Streptococcus pyogenes infections can result in acute rheumatic fever. It also causes infections associated with high morbidity and mortality. In fact, this bacterial strain is an important bacterial pathogen, causing a wide range of symptoms, from mild localized infections to life-threatening invasive infections. It causes more than 700 million infections worldwide each year and has a death rate as high as 25 percent in severe cases. When infected, the bacteria can cause illnesses ranging from sore throat to scarlet fever.
Our organization also provides testing services for the determination of streptococcus pyogenes, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
