Cyanuric acid is a pool balancing product used to help chlorine last longer. Chlorine is not stabilized in its natural state, it degrades when exposed to sunlight. Adding cyanuric acid reduces the effect of the sun on chlorine loss. The longer chlorine is present in the pool water, the longer it can be used to kill bacteria and sterilize the water.
In the pool industry, cyanuric acid is known as a chlorine stabilizer or pool conditioner. Many solid chlorination products, such as granules or tablets, have been developed to contain cyanuric acid.
Alternatively, chlorinating liquid products generally do not contain the beneficial cyanuric acid often found in tablets or granules. Pool owners who choose to use chlorinating fluids as sanitizing products also need to add stabilizers to help their chlorine last longer.
Regardless of the disinfectant type, the pool water should be tested at least once a week. Free chlorine should always be between 1-4 ppm and stabilizer at least 30-50 ppm. Areas exposed to high levels of sunlight should provide 60-80 ppm. Indoor pools do not need cyanuric acid unless they are periodically exposed to sunlight.
One of the most common chemicals used to prevent chlorine loss in swimming pools is cyanuric acid. Cyanuric acid helps reduce chlorine loss by protecting the free chlorine in the pool from the sun's ultraviolet rays, reducing the amount of chlorine needed to maintain proper disinfectant levels.
If there is a high level of cyanuric acid, its functions of killing bacteria and microorganisms and preventing algae are slowed down by binding to chlorine. Turbidity in pool water increases. Since there is no other way to reduce the cyanuric acid in the pool water, some of the pool water must be replaced with fresh water.
There is no relationship between cyanuric acid and cyanide and can be used safely in swimming pools for health reasons. In short, cyanuric acid allows the chlorine added to the pool to last longer without being affected by the sun's rays.
