Performance Test Methods for AVTP 03-170 Wheeled Military Vehicles - Suspension Performance

AVTP 03-170, one of the Allied Vehicle Test Publications published under the NATO Standardization Treaty (STANAG) , describes the suspension performance test methods and requirements carried out within the scope of performance testing of wheeled military vehicles. This standard includes test methods used to determine the performance of the suspension systems of a wheeled military vehicle.

Basically, the suspension system is a system located between the chassis and the wheels in vehicles and allows relative movement between them. A simple suspension system consists of a spring shock absorber, ball joint control arms and some fasteners to hold them together.

In wheeled military vehicles, the suspension system is one of the most important subsystems. Compared to other vehicles, these vehicles are used in more challenging conditions, and the importance of the suspension system is exponentially increased. Military vehicles are used in difficult terrain and are also heavier because their bodies are armored. The suspension system is caught between the shocks caused by the terrain and the pressure applied due to its weight.

In this regard, suspension tests are carried out in advanced laboratories from two different aspects: driving ability on rough terrain and crossing multiple obstacles. The main tests applied for this purpose are: acceleration values at certain points of the vehicle and on the body, deceleration acceleration, acceleration values on the seats, rolling angle, displacement, speed, vertical acceleration, lateral acceleration and absorbed power. According to the AVTP 03-170 standard, the maximum allowable acceleration condition at the base of the driver's seat is 2,5 G.

In the AVTP 03-170 standard, test methods for determining the suspension system performance of wheeled military vehicles are defined. One of these test methods is the single barrier pass test. The obstacle heights that should be on this test track are specified in the standard. In multiple obstacle tests, which is another test method, the brackets used in single obstacles are arranged in a semi-circle and trapezoidal form.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides suspension performance testing services among the performance test methods of wheeled military vehicles, within the scope of AVTP 03-170 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
