MIL-PRF-24613A Performance Specification - Deck Covering Materials, Interior, Cosmetic Polymeric
The standard “MIL-PRF-24613A Performance specifications - Deck coating materials, interior, cosmetic polymeric” developed by the United States Department of Defense describes the performance requirements for cosmetic polymeric deck coating materials to be applied directly over clean steel and aluminum interior deck surfaces, primed or unprimed, or over deck coating underlays conforming to the MIL-PRF-3135 standard that provide an abrasion-resistant, low-maintenance deck surface.

Deck covering materials must be of the following types, classes and grades according to this standard:
- Types:
- Type I: Epoxy resin-based materials that require an initial sealant coat.
- Type II: Polyurethane or polyurea-based materials that require an initial sealant coat.
- Type III: Epoxy resin-based materials that do not require an initial sealant coat.
- Type IV: Polyurethane or polyurea-based materials that do not require an initial sealant coat.
- Type V: Epoxy resin-based materials that do not require periodic sanding or resealing at any time during their expected ten-year service life.
- Type VI: Polyurethane or polyurea-based materials that do not require periodic sanding or resealing at any time during the expected ten-year service life.
- Classes:
- Class 1: Clear or colored resin base with colored quartz aggregate to provide the final cosmetic appearance.
- Class 2: Colored resin-based material with colored flakes and a clear sealant layer added to provide the final cosmetic appearance.
- Class 3: Clear or colored resin base with marble chip aggregate to provide the final cosmetic appearance.
- Class 4: Products consisting of two or more different colored resin-based materials mixed to provide a specific final cosmetic appearance.
- Degrees:
- Class A: For use in submarines
- Class B: For general shipboard use
The requirements in this standard are described as follows:
- Qualification: Deck covering materials provided under this specification must be products authorized by the qualifying activity to be listed on the applicable qualified products list prior to contract award.
- Composition: Deck coating materials shall be suitable for application to a finished thickness specified by the manufacturer as an overall system and shall be designed to be installed directly onto a substrate or directly onto a primed or unprimed metal substrate in accordance with MIL-PRF-3135. If the product does not require a separate substrate, the product shall be capable of smoothing welds, depressions in the deck, and other irregularities to provide an overall smooth and flat surface. If the product does not require a separate substrate, the material shall also be capable of being sloped to provide a specified slope to provide drainage in a specified area and to create a vertical recess base where the deck meets a bulkhead. For direct metal products, the system shall include a separate primer or bond coat of the system resin material to be applied to a clean, bare metal substrate.
- Type I, Class 1: Deck coating materials shall consist of premixed colored quartz aggregate, clear or colored single-component epoxy resin (or separate base and hardener components), and clear single-component epoxy resin (or separate base and hardener components) used as initial sealing layers. Sealing layers may contain an aggregate to provide the required slip resistance.
- Type I, Class 2: Deck coating materials shall consist of a clear or solid-colored epoxy base resin (or a solid-colored base and separate hardener component) to provide the bulk of the functional deck coating system, a solid-colored epoxy base resin (or a solid-colored base and separate hardener component) to provide the final deck coating color if the bulk of the deck coating system is colorless, colored flake pieces, and a clear single-component epoxy resin (or separate base and hardener components) used as initial sealing layers. The sealing layers may include an aggregate to provide the required slip resistance.
- Type I, Class 3: Deck coating materials shall consist of premixed marble chip aggregate, clear or colored single-component epoxy resin (or separate base and hardener components), and clear single-component epoxy resin (or separate base and hardener components) used as initial sealing layers. The sealing layers may contain an aggregate to provide the required slip resistance.
- Type I, Class 4: Deck coating materials consist of multiple single- or dual-component epoxy resins (or multiple base materials with separate hardener components in different colors) in different colors to be field-mixed to achieve the desired cosmetic appearance, and clear single-component epoxy resins (or separate base and hardener components) used as initial sealing layers. The sealing layers may contain an aggregate to provide the required slip resistance.
