An armored recovery vehicle is a powerful tank or armored personnel carrier chassis, typically modified for use during combat for the towing or repair of battle-damaged, stuck or inoperable armored combat vehicles such as tanks and armored personnel carriers. Many of these vehicles have motorized tracks, such as tanks and similar vehicles, enabling these vehicles to operate on uneven ground.

Armored rescue vehicles are equipped with equipment such as winches and jibs to assist in towing and recovering tactical ground vehicles. In general, any specialized lifting and recovery equipment replaces the turret and gun found in a battle tank. Armored rescue vehicles include electric generators, torches, chainsaws and fuel pumps to assist in rescue operations in some cases, or spare parts to facilitate field repairs. Since many armored recovery vehicles are based on tanks or chassis, they have an armored crew cockpit and engine. Rarely, these vehicles are equipped with a scanning mortar or heavy machine gun.

Armored recovery vehicles are typically mounted on the chassis of a main battle tank , but some are also built on the basis of other armored fighting vehicles, most commonly armored personnel carriers. These vehicles are generally built on the basis of a vehicle of the same class that they are expected to recover. A tank-based armored recovery vehicle is used to recover tanks, while an armored personnel carrier recovery vehicle is used to recover armored personnel carriers. They do not have the power to tow a vehicle significantly heavier than themselves.
