STANAG 4609 NATO Digital Motion Imaging

STANAG 4609 NATO Digital Motion Imaging

STANAG standards, which are NATO standardization agreements, determine the military standards of NATO member countries. The purpose of the STANAG 4609 standard published in this framework is to promote the interoperability of current and future motion picture systems in a NATO unified or joint service environment. Interoperability is essential as it will significantly increase the combat capability of forces and increase flexibility and efficiency to achieve their goals through the sharing of assets and the shared use of information generated from motion picture systems. Member states agree to implement these standards in whole or in part in their motion picture systems to ensure interoperability.

STANAG 4609 NATO Digital Motion Imaging

STANAG defines the architecture of motion images, interfaces, communication protocols, data elements, and message formats , as well as the relevant standardization agreements where compatibility is required.

Motion picture is a valuable asset for commanders, enabling them to meet a variety of operational, operational and tactical objectives for intelligence, reconnaissance and surveillance. The STANAG 4609 standard aims to provide common methods for the exchange of moving images between systems within and between NATO countries. This standard provides users with a unified and clear view of the standards they need to build and operate motion picture systems. This standard provides guidance on compressed, uncompressed and related motion picture sampling structures and describes motion picture time standards, motion picture metadata standards, interconnects and motion picture system parameters.

The STANAG 4609 standard allows participating countries to be managed in a way that allows sharing to meet their intelligence, reconnaissance, surveillance and other operational objectives with interoperable motion picture systems.

The mentioned standard uses the following definitions of scan formats defined by the commercial world consistently across all of the specified profiles:

  • High resolution: 1280x720 pixels or higher
  • Enhanced definition: at least 60x720 pixels at 480 Hz or 50x720 pixels at 576 Hz
  • Standard definition: 50x720 pixels at 576 Hz or 60x720 pixels at 480 Hz

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer testing services for NATO digital motion imaging activities under the STANAG 4609 standard, utilizing a trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
