MIL-STD-1130C Department of Defense Standard Practice: Connections, Electrical, Solderless, Wrapped

The MIL-STD-1130C standard, a United States military defense standard, describes the requirements for producing electrical connections that are mechanically and electrically stable, solderless wound, single, solid, round wire and properly designed winding posts (terminals).

MIL-STD-1130C Department of Defense Standard Practice: Connections, Electrical, Solderless, Wrapped

This standard includes:

  • Classes and requirements for solderless wound connections.
  • Definition and requirements for wire used in making solderless wound connections.
  • Description and requirements of the winding pole used in the construction of solderless wound connections.

This standard covers the following solderless wound electrical connection classes:

  • Class A: Solderless wound, electrical connections
  • Class B: Conventional solderless winding

Class A, solderless wound-on electrical connection is the most preferred method. This connection consists of a continuous, solid, non-insulated strand of wire tightly wound around the winding pole of a solderless wound contact to form a mechanically and electrically stable connection. The number of turns required depends on the gauge of the wire used. In addition to the length of uninsulated wire wrapped around the winding pole, a minimum of half a turn of insulated wire is wrapped around the winding pole to help provide better vibration characteristics. To perform a half turn, the wire must be in contact with at least three corners of the winding post.

If class B is a conventional solderless wound electrical connection, it is the same as described in class A, but no additional half-turn of insulated wire is required.

Solderless wound connections are made by wrapping a certain number of wires under tension around a pole with sharp corners. Sharp corners of the winding post must create high pressure points resulting in indentations in the wire or both the wire and the winding post to meet the requirements of the strip test. The resulting gas-tight, high-pressure points provide electrical continuity and mechanical stability.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer electrical connection testing services under the MIL-STD-1130C standard, specifically for defense industry standard applications, including electrical connections with solderless and coiled terminals, utilizing a trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
