MIL-DTL-46027K Detail Specifications: Aluminum Alloy, Weldable 5083, 5456 and 5059 Armor Plate
The MIL-DTL-46027K standard, a United States military defense standard, covers 0.250, 3.000, and 5083 wrought aluminum alloy armor plates in nominal thicknesses from 5456 to 5059 inches (inclusive).

Forged aluminum armor must be in the following classes as specified in the contract or purchase order:
- Class 1: Forged aluminum armor conforming to the Aluminum Association definition for 5083 aluminum alloy
- Class 2: Forged aluminum armor conforming to the Aluminum Association definition for 5456 aluminum alloy
- Class 3: Forged aluminum armor conforming to the Aluminum Association definition for 5059 aluminum alloy
The main test methods performed in the initial product inspection are:
- Chemical composition: A sample for chemical analysis is extracted from each plate selected for ballistic testing.
- Mechanical properties: A tensile test specimen is extracted from each plate selected for ballistic testing.
- Ballistic tests: Two 12x36 inch plates of each thickness to be supplied in the contract are taken for ballistic test according to the criteria in the standard annex.
- Stress corrosion tests: Stress corrosion test specimens are extracted from the same plate chosen for the ballistic test.
The main test methods performed in product conformity inspection are:
- Chemical composition: The sample must meet the chemical composition requirements when tested as specified in this standard. At this stage, ingot analysis and product analysis are performed. In the ingot analysis, at least one sample of the molten metal is taken, which represents the ingots poured as a unit from the same source molten metal.
- Mechanical properties: For tensile tests, samples are randomly selected from a different plate in the lot and only one tensile test sample is taken from each sample.
- Ballistic tests: A 12x36 inch plate is randomly selected from each batch for ballistic testing.
- Stress corrosion tests: A 12x12 inch plate is randomly selected from each batch for this test.
