MIL-HDBK-454 Military Handbook: General Guidelines for Electronic Equipment
The standard "MIL-HDBK-454 Military manual: General guidelines for electronic equipment" developed by the United States Department of Defense covers general guidelines to be used in military specifications for electronic equipment. This standard replaces the previously published standard "MIL-STD 454N Military standard: Standard general requirements for electronic equipment". This standard covers general guidelines to be used in military specifications for electronic equipment.

For the purposes of this standard, the following definitions apply:
- Battleshort is a switch used to bypass normal lockouts on mission-critical equipment during combat conditions (e.g. equipment that should not be shut down or whose mission function will fail).
- A chassis is a structural part manufactured in this way to facilitate the assembly and interconnection of electrical or electronic elements in order to provide a base for electrical or electronic circuits. It normally has drilled or stamped holes to accommodate elements but may contain only the parts necessary for its assembly and support.
- Commercial off-the-shelf equipment is equipment that can be purchased from commercial retail or wholesale distributors as is (e.g., equipment available as a cataloged part) or with only minor modifications that do not alter its form, fit, or functional characteristics.
- A frame is any structural system designed, assembled and fastened to mount or support electrical or electronic components or units.
- Fail-safe is a design feature that allows a part, unit, or equipment to fail only in a non-hazardous mode.
- An interlock is an automatic switch that removes all power from equipment when an access door, cover or plate is removed.
- A bypassable interlock is an automatic switch with a manually operated electrical bypass device to allow equipment maintenance operations on energized equipment.
- Leakage current is the current that flows through the conductive paths of equipment to a solidly grounded source.
In this standard, general guidelines for electronic equipment are grouped under the following headings:
