MIL-STD-248 Military Standard: Welding and Soldering Procedure and Performance Qualification

MIL-STD-248 Military Standard: Welding and Soldering Procedure and Performance Qualification

The MIL-STD-248 standard, a United States military defense standard, defines the welding and brazing procedures that operators must meet before any production fabrication, and describes the requirements for the qualification of welders, brazes, and braze welding operators. This standard covers manual, semi-automatic, automatic and machine welding and brazing of ferrous, non-ferrous and similar metals. The proficiency tests required by this standard are designed to demonstrate the proficiency of welding or brazing procedures and to ascertain the ability of welders, solders, welding operators and soldering operators to produce solid welds or brazes.

Requalification is not required for operators whose qualifications and competencies have been determined before the last update of this standard. However, if there are certain concerns about the adequacy of procedures or personnel's ability to produce welds that meet the intended integrity or requirements of the applicable manufacturing document, requalification may be requested in parallel with these updates, as the case may be.

Essentially, the intent of the MIL-STD-248 standard is not to require extensive requalification of previously qualified procedures or personnel. The qualification of new procedures and personnel performance is carried out in accordance with the requirements of this standard. The requirements of this standard for requalification apply to all previously qualified procedures and personnel.

This standard includes both mandatory requirements and guidelines designed to serve as standards applicable to methods, materials and inspection. Routing information is recommended but not required.

For the purposes of this standard,

  • The expression performance qualification refers to an action in which the ability of welders and welding operators to produce welds meeting the requirements of this specification is evaluated by destructive and non-destructive methods.
  • The expression procedural competence refers to an action in which test setups are prepared according to a recommended procedure and evaluated by destructive or non-destructive testing, or both.
